08 Aug Need to Know Anti-Ageing Superstars
The list of anti-ageing ingredients and beauty products these days are endless and it can be quite difficult to figure out what to look for. To help you out we’ve concocted a list of the top ingredients to look for in your skincare products in order to get the most anti-ageing benefits.
We said it once and we’ll say it again. There is nothing that compares to sunscreen in preventing your skin from ageing. Make sure it is a broad-spectrum sunscreen and preferably a mineral sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater.
It may seem simple but it is the best thing you can do for your skin. It should be reapplied frequently throughout the day, all year round, regardless of the weather forecast. Even a few minutes exposed to harmful UV light can cause damage.
Next on the list is a powerful antioxidant serum. Applying antioxidants topically helps to defend your skin against harsh environmental factors and minimize the signs of ageing. Our favourite and the one we recommend on a daily basis is Vitamin C. Vitamin C (also listed as ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and various other names) is known to be effective in diminishing the look of fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven skin tone. Applied topically, it smooths and firms the appearance of the skin. It even helps out your SPF with protecting your skin against sun damage.
Another important product to add in the mix is a proper exfoliant. And we don’t mean an abrasive scrub. We’re talking about a leave-on exfoliant which often comes in cream or gel form. Exfoliants help to remove that initial layer of rough dead skin and brighten your complexion.
Exfoliants include enzymes, as well as AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid). Enzyme exfoliants are derived from citrus fruits (such as citric acid). There are two types of AHAs to look for: glycolic and lactic acids. As for BHAs, look for salicylic acid.
Finally, a go to anti-ageing product for anyone over the age of 30 is retinol. Retinol is a skin-restoring ingredient that helps soften the appearance of wrinkles and improves skin tone and texture. Retinol is great in order to help your skin regain its youthful appearance. We recommend starting slowly, using your Retinol only once or twice a week until your skin demonstrates that it can handle nightly use.
There are thousands of anti-ageing products out there but we believe that if you stick with these select few you’re golden (literally… you’ll glow).
